At the Birth of the Eternal King

“…Thou, Lord, in the beginning hast laid the foundation of the earth; and the heavens are the works of thine hands:
They shall perish; but thou remainest; and they all shall wax old as doth a garment;
And as a vesture shalt thou fold them up, and they shall be changed: but thou art the same, and thy years shall not fail. Hebrews 1:10-12 KJV

At the birth of the humanity of Jesus Christ, this was God the Father’s declaration of the Supreme Deity of God the Son. This Person is more knowledgeable than the O.T. prophets, because He is omniscience (all knowledge). This Person is more powerful than the angels, because He is omnipotence (all power). This Person is superior to all other entities, because He is almighty God, the creator and sustainer of the universe.

The Father acknowledged the work of the Son in the creation of all things. The Father is the planner of creation and salvation. The Son is the executor of the eternal plan. All we see, all we hear, all we know about, all that exists..was decreed in eternity past by the Father, and was created instantaneously by the Son.

In the divine decrees, it is also ordained that all material creation will one day perish (be destroyed). He who created it all will roll it all up like a tattered garment and blast it into oblivion, but He Himself will never change, because He is Immutable (unchangeable). The taint of sin will be destroyed with the material universe, and will be no more. That day is coming. What God has decreed will surely come to pass.

On that night in Bethlehem, this tiny human infant embodied the character of God. Beginning as a human infant was just the start of His humiliation, having spent all of eternity past with the Father and the Holy Spirit in the heavenly realm, in command of the angelic creation. This transition was not made against His will. He had previously agreed to come into humanity, live a normal life among humans, but without the corrupting influence of the old sin nature. His mission: He must go to the cross as an adult and die spiritually under the Father’s judgment for all our sins.

He agreed to set aside His deity for 33 years and live among us. Us, with our weakness, infirmities, emotional issues, religious hang-ups, legalisms, general stupidity and stinking filth! He volunteered to do that, and then be arrested, tortured, nailed to a cross by lowly humans and receive in His sinless body the unimaginable pressure of all the sins of the whole human race, while He screamed in agony because of His separation from the Father and the Spirit for those horrendous hours on that terrible day.

All that in His human body, while in His deity the character of God never changed. Who would do such a thing? Only our loving God, the sovereign One of the universe. The designer of history, Who has a perfect plan for all His creation and is willing to sacrifice Himself to see that the plan is perfected. Only One could do it. Only One did. That’s why the Father also said, in verse 13:

“Sit at my right hand until I make your enemies a footstool for your feet”

The enemies who have opposed and hated Him throughout all history and have tried so diligently to destroy everything He has designed will eventually pay. They will serve as His footstool! We, who love and believe in Him have inherited His eternal life and will be witnesses to that rewarding event. He is ours. We are His. We are IN HIM forever.

“Your enemies will be Your footstool.” That is the promise from God the Father to God, His Son.
He never said that to any angel (verse 13). The angels have their divine assignment; Hebrews 1:14:

Are they not all ministering spirits sent out to serve for the sake of those who are to inherit salvation?

Ministering spirits.
Sent to serve.
For those who are to inherit salvation.

That’s believers in Jesus Christ. The angels serve you and me.
