Storms and Demons

They sailed to the region of the Gerasenes, which is across the lake from Galilee. When Jesus stepped ashore, he was met by a demon-possessed man from the town. For a long time this man had not worn clothes or lived in a house, but had lived in the tombs. When he saw Jesus, he cried out and fell at his feet, shouting at the top of his voice, “What do you want with me, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? I beg you, don’t torture me!” For Jesus had commanded the impure spirit to come out of the man. Many times it had seized him, and though he was chained hand and foot and kept under guard, he had broken his chains and had been driven by the demon into solitary places.
Jesus asked him, “What is your name?”
“Legion,” he replied, because many demons had gone into him. And they begged Jesus repeatedly not to order them to go into the Abyss.
A large herd of pigs was feeding there on the hillside. The demons begged Jesus to let them go into the pigs, and he gave them permission. When the demons came out of the man, they went into the pigs, and the herd rushed down the steep bank into the lake and was drowned.
When those tending the pigs saw what had happened, they ran off and reported this in the town and countryside, and the people went out to see what had happened. When they came to Jesus, they found the man from whom the demons had gone out, sitting at Jesus’ feet, dressed and in his right mind; and they were afraid. Those who had seen it told the people how the demon-possessed man had been cured. Then all the people of the region of the Gerasenes asked Jesus to leave them, because they were overcome with fear. So he got into the boat and left.
The man from whom the demons had gone out begged to go with him, but Jesus sent him away, saying, “Return home and tell how much God has done for you.” So the man went away and told all over town how much Jesus had done for him. Luke 8:26-39

Luke is meticulous in detailing many of the miracles that displayed the power of Jesus. After calming the storm in vs. 22-25, He encountered another demoniac. The reaction here was like that of previous demons: hatred and fear of God the Son. There is clearly no commonality between perfect righteousness and pure evil. The two conditions are mutually exclusive. This poor miserable creature was naked, wild, filthy and self-injurious. Jesus simply ordered the demons out of the man. His name was Legion, he (the demons) said. A legion was the largest unit of the Roman army. Apparently thousands of demons can inhabit one individual human body. They disturb the one possessed physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually. They destroy the life of the one possessed. They recognize and fear Jesus. These begged not to be sent into the abyss (bottomless pit, where the demons of the pre-flood infiltration are incarcerated. See Jude 6, 2 Peter 2:4, Genesis 6:1-4). Demons are the prehistoric fallen angels who joined Lucifer in his rebellion and attempted a coup against God and were cast out of heaven. Those in the abyss were involved in a particularly heinous attempt to corrupt the human race by procreation with human females. Those are in chains of darkness, and apparently the ones who are at large today are incapable of that same assault on humanity. God's only Son had to be born truly human in order to be the propitiation for our sins. The infiltration was an attempt to prevent His true humanity.

Jesus, in full control, allowed the terrified demons to enter into a herd of pigs instead. The pigs then, being "spooked" to say the least, went headlong into the lake and died.

Well, now. The pigherders didn't take kindly to this loss of income. The Gadarenes were frightened, also, when they saw the demoniac "clothed and in his right mind." This all did not compute. They didn't want to deal with any of it. Jesus should please leave. His power terrified them, yet the one whose need had been met begged to go with Him. He said, No, you have a testimony. Proclaim it to those back home. Jesus left, and there is no record that He ever returned to that place. Demon possession is real. It is destructive in every way. Only Jesus Christ can deliver from the power of demons.
