Security

Psalm 16: 1-11

Keep me safe, my God, for in you I take refuge.

This Psalm is a declaration by David of his own sense of security through his relationship with the Sovereign One. We Church-age Christians call it “faith-rest.” It also expresses prophetically the attitude of Jesus Christ in his incarnation, as He depended completely on the Father for His life and ministry. As Jesus is, so is the Church in this present world, and so was David as the earthly forefather of Israel’s eternal King.

I say to the Lord, “You are my Lord; apart from you I have no good thing.”

“Lord:” self-existing One. Jehovah. Father, Son, Holy Spirit. "My Adonay:" Master. David knew Him as Lord. We know Him as Lord. He is the source of everything good. That is a permanent fact of life. David depended on it. Jesus in His humanity depended on it. We depend on it.

I say of the holy people who are in the land, “They are the noble ones in whom is all my delight.”

We who belong to the Lord, and love the Lord, will love His people also. They are our family. Royal Family of God.

Those who run after other gods will suffer more and more. I will not pour out libations of blood to such gods or take up their names on my lips.

Idolatry and occultism have no place in the life of a child of God. He is our only God, for He is the creator and sustainer of the universe and the Savior of mankind.

Lord, you alone are my portion  and my cup; you make my lot secure.

The believer who truly knows and loves Jesus Christ is occupied with Him. The Lord is his priority in every detail of his life. He studies God’s Word, takes it into his soul, assimilates it into his thought pattern, makes it his frame of reference. When he has a need, there is a written scripture to fit that need; be it practical, emotional or spiritual. God has made perfect provision for his people in every circumstance of life. He is our friend and protector. The more we come to trust in Him, the more familiar with Him we will be. His Word is more real to us than anything we see, feel or experience. We learn His essence, we learn His prophecies, we memorize His promises, we claim His promises, and that is our security, our peace as we navigate our path in the earth. David did it. Jesus did it in His humanity. We must do it to survive in the devil’s world. 

The boundary lines have fallen for me in pleasant places; surely I have a delightful inheritance. 

No good thing is withheld from the believer who truly loves God and honors His Word.

I will praise the Lord, who counsels me; even at night my heart instructs me.

We who love the Lord and His Word acknowledge his nurture with praise and thanksgiving. His counsel is always available to us, even as we lie awake at night, His Word comes to us in instruction and comfort.

Jesus continually practiced this awareness of the presence of the Father in His incarnation:

I keep my eyes always on the Lord. With him at my right hand, I will not be shaken.

As He faced death:
Therefore my heart is glad and my tongue rejoices; my body also will rest secure,

As He anticipated His resurrection:
because you will not abandon me to the realm of the dead, nor will you let your faithful one see decay

As He looked forward to His ascension to the throne room of God:
You make known to me the path of life;
you will fill me with joy in your presence,
with eternal pleasures at your right hand.

What a holy, heavenly reunion that must have been! What a glorious day that will be!
