Attitude

Have this attitude in yourselves which was also in Christ Jesus, who, although He existed in the form of God, did not regard equality with God a thing to be grasped, but emptied Himself, taking the form of a bond-servant, and being made in the likeness of men. Being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross. Philippians 2:5-8

The attitude is humility. Willingness to submit to the authority of God. Result: obedience! Even to the point of death on a cross. God the Son gave up His glory and subjected Himself to the humiliation of becoming a man, with all our physical obnoxiousness, and even suffered the curse of crucifixion. That's laying down the Life. When we develop Jesus' attitude of humility, we learn to lay down our lives by foregoing our own plans and preferences for the sake of the Gospel, the Church and our loved ones. In that attitude, we can accurately represent our Lord.
