When you were dead in your sins and in the uncircumcision of your flesh, God made you alive with Christ. He forgave us all our sins, having canceled the charge of our legal indebtedness, which stood against us and condemned us; he has taken it away, nailing it to the cross. And having disarmed the powers and authorities, he made a public spectacle of them, triumphing over them by the cross. Colossians 2:13-15
Actually, you were born dead in your sins. You never had to do anything to become a sinner. You inherited sin from our father, Adam. We humans are absolutely helpless to do anything about our sin. Only God could make us alive, IN CHRIST. This was a legal transaction. He cancelled the IOU that was against us (legal indebtedness; the King James Version calls it the handwriting of ordinances), because Jesus paid the debt in full, receiving our judgment on the cross. The demonic "powers and authorities" intended for Jesus' crucifixion to be the end of Him and of humanity's hope, but not so. He triumphed! Waved the cancelled debt in their faces! This is the doctrine of expiation: He completely paid it off. We are free.
