Guard Truth

Timothy, guard what has been entrusted to your care. Turn away from godless chatter and the opposing ideas of what is falsely called knowledge, which some have professed and in so doing have departed from the faith. I Timothy 6:20-21


What has been entrusted to Timothy's care is the mystery doctrine of the Church Age. The Church was a mystery to Old Testament believers, but was revealed by Jesus after His resurrection. As pastor of a local church, this young preacher had an enormous responsibility, first to the Lord, then to his flock, whom he must teach the truth of the Gospel and the Christian Way of Life. Paul was deeply concerned that Timothy be steadfast in truth and keep God's system of authority within the local church. He is cautioned here and elsewhere in this same epistle (ch. 1:5-7, 6:3-5) to avoid endless debating and arguing, instigated by those who consider themselves too intellectual for simple instruction and obedience to God's Word. Christians who get involved in such debates become confused in their priorities and distract Godly believers from the main objective: Learn, absorb and apply the Word of God! There is no debate. If you reject the Word of God, there is nothing to discuss, and what you have is not faith.
