For you know that it was not with perishable things such as silver or gold that you were redeemed from the empty way of life handed down to you from your ancestors, but with the precious blood of Christ, a lamb without blemish or defect. He was chosen before the creation of the world, but was revealed in these last times for your sake. I Peter 1:18-20
Redeemed: purchased from the slave market and set free. Slave market: the worldly way of life which is all we know until we receive the salvation offered by Jesus Christ. The slave market holds no future and no hope. Our ancestors may have been religious or pagan; both legacies are meaningless and empty. Faith is what we know, and what we know is that our redemption was purchased with the blood of Christ. Blood of Christ: His spiritual death on the cross as He bore the penalty for all our sins. "My God, My God, why have you forsaken Me?" (Matthew 27:46). His physical death came after the price was paid. His work was done. "It is finished!" And He bowed His head and gave up His spirit. He is the perfect Lamb of God, ordained in eternity past for this mission. The death of Jesus Christ on the cross was an accomplished fact in the Father's sight from before the creation. Everything else in the history of the world led up to that event, and all that has happened since is affected by it.
