We Were Eyewitnesses

For we did not follow cleverly devised stories...but we were eyewitnesses of his majesty...We ourselves heard this voice that came from heaven when we were with him on the sacred mountain...Above all, you must understand that no prophecy of Scripture came about by the prophet’s own interpretation of things. For prophecy never had its origin in the human will, but prophets, though human, spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit. 2 Peter 1:16,18,20-21

For those who choose to question the authority of the Holy Scriptures, Peter presents his credentials. His reference is to the transfiguration described in Matthew 17:1-5. Jesus, accompanied by Moses and Elijah, revealed His glory to Peter, James and John on the mountain. God's thunderous voice validated His Son. These guys didn't just pass on stories, folks. They were with Jesus all the days of His earthly ministry. These three were even privileged to see His glorious majesty before the resurrection. They watched, listened, learned, witnessed His miracles, ministered with Him, loved Him; and when His darkest hour arrived, they failed Him. When they were accused of devising a hoax, they defended through persecution and death the resurrection of their Lord. Hoaxers don't do that. Charles Colson points out in his writings that it took less than two weeks for the Watergate conspirators to fall apart, though their whole life's work, as well as the president's, hung in the balance. Conspiracies don't stand the test of time. Truth does. And Truth frees from legalism and superstition and pseudo-scientific nonsense.
